Midterm Presentation

Hello everyone. Here is Vicky. Today I will introduce you to two of my blue jewelry collections. The most important thing for me in this jewelry collection is "I am a blue, and I love blue deeply.” First, I will introduce you to what I love, which is at the same time one of the reasons that led me to create this collection of jewelry.

Nature is an essential part of my life because this beauty of nature can heal me when I encounter troubles. The lines they draw are free, perfect, and irreplaceable. So when I am creating my own work, I always hope to incorporate this natural beauty into my work, so that people can feel the beauty I feel in natural things while watching my works. I hope that viewers can feel the infinite charm and beauty of nature in my works, and that my jewelry pieces can put the wearer in a good mood every day.

The colour blue appears very frequently in my work because I like it very much. I'm an extroverted loner who will happily interact with others, but I also have a world of my own. When I am in my own world, I stop all communication with the outside. At this time, I have an urge to paint a large area of blue without borders. It can bring me infinite peace, and it can keep me in this state forever. Sometimes I will stare at blue, then I will feel that I am blue, blue is me, we are one.

In the past, I tried to use other materials to make jewelry, but it turned out that this is really an interesting and difficult process. Because the diversity of materials makes it difficult for me to choose, and I don't know how to combine them better, the result is always a mess. But I know how important the use of materials is to an artist, because it will mean unlimited possibilities (diversification of materials).

At the same time, two artists that I like very much also bring me a lot of inspiration.

Yves Klein is a French artist known mainly for his blue monochrome paintings and his bold experiments with new techniques and new artistic attitudes. That's why I love Yves Klein so much, the blue he creates is like a black hole, I can't help myself.

Lily Kanellopoulou

In her Jewelry pieces, series of "Healing" attract me most. After she suffered the effects of a great family loss, she decided to start making jewelry to heal herself. This is why she named her jewelry series “Healing”. It is made out epoxy resin combined with fragments of woods, and then she added the metal element to finish the composition. Colour, lines and fragments of the original starting pieces were used to give movement and different energy to the pieces, give them life. The appearance of the "Healing" series of works looks extremely "rock", and it is full of the beauty of nature. In her works, she not only maintains the beauty of nature's free appearance, but also possesses reasonable composition and colour matching that people have formulated through rational thinking. She made me add more natural materials, like rocks, to my work when choosing materials.

Nature and blue are both the loves of my life. So I explore the connection between nature and blue more deeply, allowing them to merge with each other and show them in the jewelry of this collection. Here, you will feel the most real me.

Although my jewelry collection this time will all be presented in blue, I don't want the viewer to get aesthetic fatigue, so I have investigated the colour blue thoroughly, thus making each of my pieces both uniform and different. Blue is not really a single colour, it can be combined with various colours to reach a new blue colour.

And here are the different blues… Blue mixed with red and also blue mixed with yellow

Each different blue colour gives a different feeling - calm, cold, expansive - and each of these feelings can correspond to a natural thing. Just like whenever I see a dark blue ocean, it gives me a feeling of expansiveness, while a light blue glacier gives me a feeling of cold. So, blue and nature are connected by a feeling.

I then summarized the blue colour for the surface of the ocean, the deep ocean:, the iceberg, the starry sky and the sky to represent their own characteristics. This will make my work more representative.

After I decided on the colour of the piece I made my choice of materials.

My main material is resin, and then I use resin to combine with other materials.

The mixture of resin and colour essence can create many different colours, and the shade of colour depends on how much colour essence is added. If you put more, the colour will be darker, if you put less, the colour will be more translucent.

The combination of fabric and resin is made by me pouring the right amount of resin into the mold first, then after it solidifies, I put the fabric on the solidified resin and finally pour another layer of resin on it.

The pigment and coloured foil are made in a manner equivalent to the combination of resin and fabric.

These natural stones all have different colours, and these colours can represent different natural things. I want to be able to include some natural materials in my jewelry that describes nature.

Then I started to think about how to link these resins together. Using only the molds available online would have been more limiting, because the only shapes available online were more regular geometric shapes, but that wasn't what I wanted. Then it occurred to me that I could use the 3d printing technology I used last semester to create a transparent container into which I could then pour the resin directly. And I didn't need to worry about how to link the three separate parts together.

But at this point I wasn't sure what kind of container shape I should design, and then I saw this blue image on my computer, and that's what I wanted! This natural, abstract line makes me feel free and the unrestrained nature of the sea. I relaxed myself as much as possible and then pictured in my mind what I remembered of the sea. I stop controlling my own pen and just let my hand move freely. Then I change some of the lines that are too abstract through my own aesthetic criteria. And finally it took on its present form.

The first greenish one is the colour I have in mind for the surface of the sea. In the middle of the largest part I chose to use shell pieces combined with resin, because when the light shines on the shell pieces will have a hint of shine, just like the sunlight shining on the surface of the sea. In the middle of the smaller two parts I choose to use transparent blue resin, because I I think the sea is very clear, so I choose the more permeable resin. The small container on the far left also uses a more green coloured resin, but the colour will be relatively strong, in order to interconnect with the next piece.

The second work I wanted to show the depth of the sea, so I chose to use dark blue as the main colour for this work. Because for me the depth of the sea is very dark. In the middle of this work I chose to use a combination of coloured foil and resin because the folds of the foil, that is, the patterns, resemble the mud and coral in the deep sea. On the right side of the far edge is the lighter coloured resin, and from right to left the colour gets darker. This edge is like the transition from the surface of the ocean to the depths of the sea, getting deeper and deeper.

And I also chose stones that harmonize with the colour of the whole work as part of these works. But there is no real meaning, I just want to add natural things to the works that depict nature. And the stones will look very transparent in the sunlight.

My question.

You're concept of using a colour as your inspiration is quite interesting. You have found some wonderful shades of blue and having the clear outline has left it so that we really focus on just those particular blues. It also brings into play what someone might be wearing that could play off the blues. Have you thought of using contrasting colours to make a dramatic contrast, or going with white or black or will you continue to use the clear and keep exploring the shades of blue? I can't help but think of geographic pictures of islands or microscopic photos of cells when I look at these! Nicely done! I can't wait to see what the other pieces will …

Hi, Fiona! Thank you so much for your likes and suggestions! I was initially considering whether I should add some contrasting colors of blue (like red) when I created this series, but then I vetoed my idea because I wanted to create a relatively pure blue. But I'll be adding more white and black, which are really good blending colors. I'll keep working on the colors, thank you very much for the suggestion!

Blue is also my favorite color, especially sea blue. I love the fact that you added a stone to represent nature in your second work. The stone's color is beautiful, and I can imagine how it would look in the sunlight, like a beam of light on a rock at the sea's depth.

I love the fact that your starting point was a colour. You asked whether a coloured container would look better than a clear one. I think you could see what colours will enhance a particular shade of blue and use that as an accent colour for the container. But it's a fine line, the danger is that you will loose the emphasis on the blue colour if your not careful. I look forward to the evolution of your idea.

Thank you for your suggestions and reminders, Saira! I will try to make this container in other colours as much as possible now! Indeed, as you worry, I'm afraid that when the "container" comes out with 3d printing technology, it won't match my design. I will keep trying :)

Really thoughtful and well prepared presentation Vicky! I’m sorry we didn’t have more time during class time for students to respond to your work but I hope they take the time to come here and do that.
