Midterm Reflection

Going through the process of creating the first two pieces and the final product of the pieces facilitated my design for the next pieces to be revamped. These two pieces of jewelry that have been made into finished pieces show my initial design ideas and the final product is better than I thought it would be. Although I am satisfied with the design ideas, there are still many areas of improvement and areas that I think do not meet my expectations. So with the questions and suggestions from the classmates in the blog, I will reflect on the first two pieces and improve the design of the remaining unformed pieces (color combination, composition, use of materials, etc.).
First of all, the overall color combination of these two works is more towards a single color (blue), and although there are more types of blue, it still tends to make people visually tired. Through the suggestions of my classmates, I considered whether to add a contrasting color of blue to enhance the visual impact of the whole work, but I gave up - I wanted to create a relatively pure blue. However, I considered adding colors other than white and black that are associated with blue (e.g., green and purple). This would give the whole piece a rich color.
Secondly, I thought about the materials used in the work. In my first two works, the materials I used in combination with resin (colored foil and shell pieces) were flat and two-dimensional, lacking a certain sense of three-dimensionality, and the small parts of a work (containers) were almost all on the same level, which made the whole work look flat and not three-dimensional. So I chose the more three-dimensional materials - soft pottery, wool felt, glass, etc.. I hope these materials are added to the whole work with a more three-dimensional sense.
Finally, I thought about the outermost container. The transparent resin container actually worked better than I expected - when I put in the colored resin and other materials, I found that the different layers of colored resin were visible from the side of the container. It is not the container itself that determines the color of the container, but the color of the resin inside and the color of the background, which could be any color. But it does make the whole work look a bit too transparent, so I will choose to change the background to other bright colors to compensate for this one problem. In fact, I have been thinking whether the container color should be replaced with a translucent blue container. But I hope that the combination of the fully transparent material, the color of the material in the container and the different color of the background can bring more possibilities to my work.
There may still be other shortcomings in the work, which I will continue to identify and address in the process of creation.
Thoughtful reflection about your work. I would not call anything a ‘shortcoming’, each piece is just like a step in your research and development. What interested me most about your reflection here was the feedback you responded to about the three-dimensional quality of your work. The new resin research you posted about is sort of popping the flat resin works into the three-dimensional realm and I think this is really exciting.
